It might seem obvious, many forget to wear comfortable shoes for their Samba classes. And although comfortable shoes are a great start, we strongly recommend investing in some proper dancing shoes. This is because a proper dance shoe will give you just the right amount of traction. This will allow you to move around the floor and practice your Samba dance skills without having to think about the shoes you are wearing. Dance shoes have thinner soles than normal shoes and a steel shank for support. The shoe material is also flexible and lightweight.

Originated in Brazil, the Samba mimics the celebratory, carnival atmosphere. Light on your feet with backward and forward steps, moving your body in a classic 4/4 time. The Samba truly gives the audience and dancers a wonderful taste of Brazilian culture.
Samba has its foundations from the African slave trade in Brazil throughout the seventeenth century. Samba is also the symbolic dance of the Brazilian Carnival and is one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions.
The origins of Samba all started in the Brazilian sugarcane plantations. African slaves would dance to the rhythm of 2/4 percussion with rapid steps and slides. The upper body would stay relatively still whilst the excitement of the dance resonated from the hips and legs.
When slavery ended, the freed slaves would migrate out of the cities and put together dance troupes, ready for carnival. The upper classes would often look down on Samba due to its uninhibited nature, however, its popularity grew throughout the classes it became a mainstay in carnival.
Samba has developed over many years and there are now many different forms of the Latin American dance. The world has welcomed the many types of Samba and it is danced in ballrooms and carnivals across the globe.
