Viennese Waltz is a highly impressive ballroom dance and it is the eldest of the modern ballroom dance styles that are still around today. It was developed around central Europe and was derived from the Austrian Ländler dance.
Its height of popularity was in the early 19th century; however, the dance has never gone out of style. It is danced roughly twice as quickly as the Waltz and is a partnered dance.
The Viennese Waltz came to be in the latter half of the 18th century and gained popularity through the Congress of Vienna in the early 1900s. Its origin can be traced back to the 1500’s it which the high society in Germany would dance the Volta.
The Volta eventually came to fade away from the affluent society as it was deemed too risqué; however, in Austria, a very similar dance was performed by common people. This was called the Ländler and over time transformed into the Viennese Waltz when popularised by the famous composer Johann Strauss.
The dance continued to grow in popularity and developed over the years. In the 1940s, the Viennese Waltz was removed from standard competition dances due to anti-German sentiments; however, in 1950 two professional dancers presented a beautiful version of the dance for the world’s dance leadership in England and it was reinstated. This wonderful ballroom dance is still extremely popular today.
There are no rules to this, however, there are some styles that are more popular than others. These might include Waltz, Sway, The Slow Dance, Swing, Foxtrot and of course Viennese Waltz just to name a few.
