It was a popular dance style in the 1950s that was danced to energetic yet steady beats. The Cha Cha gets its charm from its lively and playful nature and can be a great starting block for new dancers.
Before being known as the Cha Cha, Cuba boasted a popular dance called the “triple mambo”. This was essentially a slower version of the Cha Cha that we know today.
In 1952, a highly esteemed dance teacher from England, Pierre Lavelle, made a trip to Cuba and took an interest in the triple mambo. When he returned, he taught this dance to his students and over time it became known as the ballroom Cha Cha Cha.
The Cha Cha Cha was introduced to the United States in 1954 and became the next dance craze. Big band instruments were also introduced to the instrumentation of the dance.
Over the years, the Cha Cha Cha was changed officially to be named simply the Cha Cha.
