Bolero is a dance style characterised by its romantic movements to slow music. Bolero originated during the 1700s in Spain as a fashionable ballroom dance that was inspired by musicians from around the world. There is also a version of Bolero which stems from Cuba.
The distinctive elements of this beautiful dance consist of the paseo (rhythmic walk) and the bien parado (a sudden stop).
Unlike many forms of dance, Bolero can be traced back to one man named Sebastiano Carezo. He is thought to have invented the dance in Spain during the 1780s. The influence of this dance came from the Fandango and is known for its grace and flow.
This form of Bolero can be danced as a couple or as a soloist and has traditional Spanish instrumentation such as castanets and guitar.
The Cuban form of Bolero originated in Santiago de Cuba in the 1800s and is different to its Spanish counterpart with the same name. The composer José Pepe Sánchez composed the first bolero called Tristezas in 1883.
After a short while, the music evolved and changed the rhythmic time from 3/4 to 4/4 and took Afro-Cuban influences in instrumentation. The dance changed from slow and romantic to more energetic and thrilling.
Eventually, Cuban Bolero travelled into Mexico and through to Central America. This version of the dance proved more popular than the Spanish version and is still danced around the world today.
There are no rules to this, however, there are some styles that are more popular than others. These might include Waltz, Sway, The Slow Dance, Swing, Foxtrot and of course Bolero just to name a few.
