Dance shoes have thinner soles than normal shoes and a steel shank for support. The shoe material is also flexible and lightweight.

Bachata music was popularised in many Central American clubs during the 1960s. This Latin American dance style can be performed individually or with a partner and the basic steps were inspired from Bolero.

Sadly, due to a Dominican Republic dictatorship at the time, the Bachata was held back from the mainstream and considered a lower form of art than other dances. This was due to the fact that Trujillo (the Dominican Republic dictator) did not like Bachata. He found this kind of music and dance so offensive that he banned them both. This lead to the music and dance only being experienced in places away from the limelight.
