It might seem obvious, many forget to wear comfortable shoes for their Rumba classes. And although comfortable shoes are a great start, we strongly recommend investing in some proper dancing shoes. This is because a proper dance shoe will give you just the right amount of traction. This will allow you to move around the floor and practise your Rumba dance skills without having to think about the shoes you are wearing. Dance shoes have thinner soles than normal shoes and a steel shank for support. The shoe material is also flexible and lightweight.

Rumba developed into a marketing term for Cuban music in North America during most of the twentieth century. The term Rumba was also used by Cubans as a synonym for “party” that involved dance, rhythm and singing.
There are two recognised forms of Rumba: International and American. The two have varying elements such as different counts, hip motions and steps.
The Rumba first came to fruition in the 16th century and was developed by African slaves in Cuba. It was a quick dance with sensual movements which was to portray a man pursuing a woman romantically. It was expressive and was twinned with African inspired instruments such as maracas and drums to accompany the dance.
If we look back through history, the word “Rumba” was and still is used to describe many different Latin American dances. These mainly refer to the Rumba genre of Afro-Cuban music and dance styles such as Danzon, Son and Nangino.
Another form of Rumba is the ballroom style. It originated from the Cuban rhythm dance known as “bolero-son”. In the early 20th century, Rumba made its way to the United States and grew in popularity over a couple of decades.
In the 1930s, London’s lead dance tutor Monsieur Pierre introduced Cuban Rumba to Europe and in 1955 the dance was officially established. Today, Rumba is danced worldwide in competition ballroom and socially.
There are no rules to this, however, there are some styles that are more popular than others. These might include Waltz, Sway, The Slow Dance, Swing, Foxtrot and of course Rumba just to name a few.
